The Day He Asked Me to Be His Wife
August 1st 2024 is a date I will treasure forever. Not only was it our four year anniversary, but it also happened to fall on National Girlfriend Day. I genuinely thought we were simply heading out to celebrate with a nice meal, nothing more, nothing less. I had absolutely no idea that John had something far more special planned.
Instead of taking me to a restaurant, he drove us to Miradouro Do Guindaste in Madeira. As a couple, we love adventure, discovering new places, and being surrounded by nature. The outdoors has always been a huge part of our relationship, so arriving at such a breathtaking viewpoint felt incredibly fitting. The scenery was dramatic, peaceful, and completely overwhelming in the best possible way. It truly encapsulated us.
John suggested we walk along the cliff top to find a spot to have a picnic. I remember laughing and telling him there was no chance I could sit on the floor because my legs were still in agony from completing the PR1 hike the day before. I also mentioned, very casually, that there was a strange man with a camera who seemed to be watching us, completely unaware of what was about to happen next.
And then suddenly, John was down on one knee, asking me to be his wife.
In that moment, everything else faded away. The view, the nerves, the confusion about the camera all disappeared as reality hit. Of course I said yes. The strange man with the camera turned out to be our photographer, secretly hired by John to capture the proposal. Even better, we had a bit of an audience. People nearby started clapping and cheering, almost like paid actors, which made the moment even more surreal and emotional.
As if that was not enough, a local couple who were down on the beach below happened to be flying a drone and unknowingly captured the proposal on video. It still blows my mind that the moment was caught from so many angles, completely unplanned.
The hotel had prepared the most beautiful picnic for us, complete with champagne and special treats. We sat for a while, soaking everything in, replaying the moment over and over again, before heading back to the hotel. John had booked a table at the restaurant, where we enjoyed a fantastic meal together, still smiling and slightly in disbelief at what had just happened.
The evening did not end there. We went to my parents room where the kids were spending time together, and John got to tell them the big news. Watching their faces light up with excitement and surprise was just as special as the proposal itself. We popped a bottle of champagne and spent the rest of the evening celebrating together, surrounded by love.
It was thoughtful, adventurous, emotional, and perfectly us. A day I will never forget, and the start of our next chapter together.
