Moulin Rouge Musical Review

Well where do I start, it was ‘Spectacular, Spectacular’ I honestly want to go back as soon as possible. John and myself were very lucky to bag tickets to this amazing musical in the presale when they went on sale last year. I had been on the mailing list since 2020 as the original dates for the show was March 2021 but due to the pandemic it was postponed like most things to the end of the year. So instead of cramming it into our busy December schedule we decided it would be great to go around Valentines Day. Now like most things on valentines day the price of tickets were high, so because it was half term we went for a Tuesday showing (the day after valentines) and the prices for great seats were much more affordable.

We got our hands of two tickets on the end of the front row for £89 this was before they introduced the can-can seats which were placed right in front of the stage, but don’t let this put you off and make you buy the more expensive can-can seats. Row B and C were very much immersed in the show and we couldn’t be more excited for the show to start. Unfortunately as of February 2022 masks were still being enforced in theatres and the only time you could remove them was to eat or drink.

To start the evening we had a table booked at Brasserie Zedel, which is opposite Piccadilly Theatre where the Moulin Rouge is staged. It was a stunning building and a lot bigger on the inside. The menu very much reminded me of the restaurant I ate at in Paris, Chez André which if you’re ever in Paris you must check out. Service was amazing we were delayed due to a dress malfunction and traffic but they were still able to seat us and knew we were catching a show. The food was delicious and came out very quickly giving us plenty of time to enjoy our food.

We wandered across to the theatre covid passes at the ready and our masks. We grabbed a drink from the bar and made our way to our seats. I was absolutely blown away by the set; I genuinely felt I had walked into the film itself. As the audience was settling into their seats, members of the cast started small performances on the stage to set the tone. As I have a degree in design for film, tv and theatre I was amazed by the costumes and just everything around me. The show started with a big singing number and they very much put their own mark on the musical. I’m very much versed on the film and know it inside out so it was great that they stayed true to the script but added in or changed songs to make it more up to date with the times and each song still fit the vibe of the story, like if Baz Luhrmann filmed it today.

As I do with the film my emotions got the better of me as we were reaching the end and the inevitable was about to happen. The actors portrayed the characters great; it was lovely to see they also put their own mark on the characters instead of copying the personas from the film. Harold Zidler was by far the one to watch and sometimes stole the show but in all honesty they all performed amazing and I hope this show goes on for much longer then you can currently buy tickets (till the end of July 2022), I would love to get another chance to see it maybe even the can-can seats.
