A Girl’s Trip to The Cotswolds

Last October I took a weekend trip to the Cotswolds with my daughter, mum and our golden retriever Nala. It was so nice to get away with just the girls and explore an area of the UK I had never been to. Instagram reels had a big influence on my decision of where to stay and where to go, which seems to be a theme of mine. We stayed in this lovely cottage run by The Meetings Holiday Lets, just outside of the famous town of Chipping Norton; you can start to see where I am going with this.

We drove down late on a Friday evening and were greeted at the cottage by a little welcome pack, which included treats for Nala. We unpacked and had a nice dinner and relaxed for the evening, as it was a long drive. Saturday morning was an early start, quick breakfast then on the road to Cotswolds Wildlife Park and Gardens. It’s the only one I am aware of that allows dogs, of course they must be on a lead at all times and are not allowed in any indoor area or the bird enclosure. Nala had a great time and was amazed by everything, she also loved seeing all the other dogs and getting fussed by strangers. It was a great time to practise some steadiness as there was a lot of stimulation around her and she can sometimes just go crazy but she was honestly so well behaved.

My daughter also had a great time seeing all the animals, her favourite being the penguins and the fact she got to see a baby rhino made her day. The weather stayed dry for our visit but it quickly became overcast and started to rain as we left. On our route back we stopped of in a nearby town of Burford, it was very small and typical of the Cotswolds. It really was stunning and quaint; we picked up some vegan cakes and made our way back the cottage to recharge.

Sunday was a slower day; we had a relaxing breakfast and decided that I couldn’t leave Chipping Norton without going to the famous Diddly Squat Farm Shop. I was nervous, as I didn’t know if the queue was going to be huge and I was hoping the weather would stay dry. So we arrived midmorning, there was no long queue of cars but there was a small line of people waiting to go into the farm shop. It was dry so we joined the line, we got our obligatory photos next to the sign and I picked up some bits from the shop for breakfast. Afterwards we grab ourselves a hot drink in the converted barn where then everyone around us needed to fuss Nala.

Sunday afternoon we got ourselves a Sunday lunch in Chipping Norton, we chose a pub that allowed dogs and had some really good reviews. Unfortunately I will not be giving it one as the service was slow, my daughters starter’s which was just vegetable sticks with hummus came out looking dry and old. When our roast dinners came out we had asked for 3 meats but only got 2, it took asking several different staff members to find out they had run out of one of the meats and it was only 1pm. So for the price we paid for our meals we were not impressed and won’t be returning. We returned to the cottage, relaxed with a glass of Malbec and watched a film.

Monday morning it was our time to leave our lovely cottage and head home but we decided we would visit Oxford first. After the horrendous journey to the city centre, where I actually got rear-ended at a roundabout, we started on our little wander around the city. It was honestly beautiful and not knowing where we were actually going made it exciting. We ended up walking round the back of Christ church college and Merton College towards the river and punts. As we crossed the river the heavens opened and we sought shelter in a pub called The Cape of Good Hope, I’m so glad we did. We decided to get a small lunch to wait out the rain; the food was impeccable; so delicious I wanted a second helping. I would definitely recommend this place as they allow dogs and just after opening time its nice and quiet, I’m sure it gets busier as the day goes on.

It was time to get back to the car and make our way home, it was a lovely relaxing trip with not too many things crammed into our days in the Cotswolds. I enjoyed the fact it was just the girls and it gave us some long over due bonding time and I’m looking forward to doing something similar again soon.
